Description

Firstly, I'm back. After an extended vacation away from DA; I have returned.  And its great to be back.

Dang, I love this photo. I consider this one of the best pictures I've taken.

The Kookaburra (genus Dacelo) is nicknamed the "bushman's clock" for its habit of singing loudly (which sounds like laughter) at dawn and dusk. Its a type of Kingfisher. Rodents and insects make up most of its diet; but they will also sometimes catch and eat poisonous snakes.

Photo taken at the Memphis Zoo, in May of 2013.

I LOVE this shot. The intensity in the eye, the contrast between the hardness of the beak and the almost painterly quality in the feathers, the way the neck feathers swirl away and down from the beak, it all comes together really well. I think the way it's framed/cropped/whatever is good- the lines draw you from the smooth curve of the head down to the jagged tip of the beak, but that eye pulls the focus back up, so that it's hard to stop looking. Hard to say what could be done to improve this; maybe if the tip of the beak were sharpened and the wing were blurred and softened a bit more?
